How do you paint a tile floor?
It is important to note that tiled flooring is most commonly found in high traffic areas, like the bathroom and kitchen. If you were to paint over tiling in these areas, there is an increased risk that it will bubble or peel from being exposed to moisture or scratching. There are also significant health concerns if paint were to chip or peel, especially if children or pets live in the home.
The below steps are what you will need to do to paint a tile floor:
- Sand your tile floors. This will help make the surface slightly more abrasive and help the primer adhere. It is also more convenient for cleaning stains as opposed to traditional cleaning products.
- Vacuum up any remaining dust and debris from sanding. Then go in with a heavy-duty surface cleaner to prevent fungal growth or mould.
- Repair any missing grout or cracked tiles with filler or decorating caulk
- Apply primer. All of our floor paints have datasheets available with the recommended paint primers to apply beforehand.
- Paint your tiles. We would recommend using a paintbrush on the edges and grout then going over the rest with a paint roller. Apply up to three coats of paint.
- Allow your newly painted tile floor to fully dry before walking on it. We would recommend a couple of days minimum but this could be longer depending on the humidity.
How to paint a garage floor
Follow the below steps to paint a garage floor:
- Clean and prep your floor. This can be achieved with degreaser and your choice of tool. Either a power washer, floor buffing machine or stiff-bristled scrubbing brush with a hose and a high-pressure nozzle if you want to do this manually.
- If your garage floor has any old paint or sealers, this will also need to be removed with a chemical stripper.
- Fill in any cracks with your choice of filler - this will depend on the size of any cracks you have. Remove any excess product with a scraper or wet rag to create a smooth, level surface. Check the product’s datasheet for the recommended cure times before painting.
- Apply primer to help the paint adhere better to your floor. All of our floor paints have datasheets on the product pages with the recommended paint primers to apply beforehand.
- Apply paint. We recommend cutting around the edges with a brush then using a paint roller for the remaining floor. Apply a second or third coat if desired.
- Give your garage floor at least 24 hours to dry before walking on it. Wait at least a week before driving over your newly painted garage floor.
What kind of paint to use on ceramic floor tiles?
Before choosing your paint to apply to ceramic tiles, it is vital to prep the floor tiles with the appropriate primer. This will help you achieve better coverage and increase the longevity of your newly painted ceramic floor tiles. All of our floor paints have individual datasheets on their product pages which can advise you on the best primers to use.
We would always recommend using a heavy-duty floor paint that can manage the high footfall of areas with ceramic floor tiles. Some of our customers’ favourites include the Ronseal Diamond Hard Floor Paint and Johnstone’s Flortred Standard Floor Paint.
How long does floor paint take to dry?
All individual floor paints will have specific drying times that are recommended by the manufacturer. This could be 24-48 hours as a minimum and even longer before opening the newly painted floor for general usage. We would always recommend waiting a few days before moving furniture onto a freshly painted floor.
