Frequently asked questions about wooden floor finish
How do you paint a wooden floor?
Here are our recommended steps for painting a wooden floor:
- Clear all furniture in the room that you would like to paint. This is much easier than moving furniture as you go and painting a section at the time.
- No matter the current state of your wooden floor, now is the time to sand it. If it is a small area, you could opt for handheld sanding tools such as our sponges and sanding pads. For larger floor areas, we would recommend using a disc sander.
- Now that you have sanded the floor, it is time to clean it. We recommend the Liberon Floor Cleaner which is ideal for preparing floors to be re-finished. For outdoors wooden floors, opt for Osmo Wood Reviver or Barrettine Wood Reviver. Allow your floor to dry completely before the next step.
- Use wood filler to fill any holes or cracks in your wooden floor. Allow this to dry completely then prime the floor with the recommended paint primer for your chosen floor paint. We would recommend using a roller brush to apply the primer for efficiency and a smooth application.
- It is now time to paint your wooden floor. Ensure that the room is well ventilated with all windows and doors open. With your chosen floor paint, apply paint around the edges of the room whilst avoiding getting paint on the skirting.
- When tackling the main area of your floor, ensure that you are painting along the wood grain and not against it for the smoothest finish. Whether you choose to paint with a roller, pad or brush, make sure to start in the furthest corner and work your way towards the door so you can leave the room without stepping on fresh paint.
- Apply at least two coats of paint and check your chosen floor paints’ datasheet for drying times between coats.
- Allow the paint to dry for a minimum of 24 hours before walking on it. Avoid moving furniture back in for at least a few more days to allow the paint to dry and cure.
